8.7Profit, Loss and Discount

Businesses use percentages to express profitability and savings. There are two separate chains to keep track of:

  • Cost price → Selling price: Determines profit or loss.
  • Marked price → Selling price: Determined by discount.

All three follow the same shape, and the only thing that changes is what you divide by.

That last column is the whole trap: profit and loss are measured against what the seller PAID, a discount against what the shop ASKED.

Profit percentage

A mobile phone accessories shop buys a Bluetooth earphone set for $45\displaystyle \$45 and sells it for $63\displaystyle \$63. Find the profit percentage.

=1845×100%\displaystyle = \dfrac{18}{45} \times 100\%
=40%\displaystyle = 40\%

Discount and selling price

A hawker stall sells fishball noodles at a marked price of $6\displaystyle \$6. During a senior citizen promotion, a 15%\displaystyle 15\% discount is given. Find the selling price.

=15100×6.00\displaystyle = \dfrac{15}{100} \times 6.00
=$0.90\displaystyle = \$0.90
Selling price\displaystyle \text{Selling price}
=$6$0.90\displaystyle = \$6 - \$0.90
=$5.10\displaystyle = \$5.10
