8.4Expressing One Quantity as a Percentage of Another

To express quantity AA as a percentage of quantity BB, divide AA by BB and multiply by 100%100\%. The result tells you what fraction of BB the quantity AA is, expressed out of 100100.

Expressing as a percentage

In a class of 36\displaystyle 36 students, 27\displaystyle 27 passed a math quiz. What percentage of the class passed?

=2736×100%\displaystyle = \dfrac{27}{36} \times 100\%
=0.75×100%\displaystyle = 0.75 \times 100\%
=75%\displaystyle = 75\%

Comparing by percentage

School A has 480\displaystyle 480 students and 144\displaystyle 144 are in sports CCA. School B has 350\displaystyle 350 students and 91\displaystyle 91 are in sports CCA. Which school has a higher percentage of students in sports CCA?

School B: 91350×100%=26%\dfrac{91}{350} \times 100\% = 26\%
School A has a higher percentage (30%>26%30\% > 26\%).
