8.1Percentage, Fraction and Decimal

The symbol %\% means "per hundred". So x%x\% literally means xx out of every 100100, which is the fraction x100\dfrac{x}{100}.

Definition
x%=x100\displaystyle x\% = \dfrac{x}{100}

The four conversion routes

  1. Percentage → Fraction: Divide by 100100 and simplify. e.g. 84%=84100=212584\% = \dfrac{84}{100} = \dfrac{21}{25}
  2. Percentage → Decimal: Divide by 100100 (shift decimal point 2 places left). e.g. 84%=0.8484\% = 0.84
  3. Fraction → Percentage: Multiply by 100%100\%. e.g. 1120=1120×100%=55%\dfrac{11}{20} = \dfrac{11}{20} \times 100\% = 55\%
  4. Decimal → Percentage: Multiply by 100%100\%. e.g. 0.375=0.375×100%=37.5%0.375 = 0.375 \times 100\% = 37.5\%

Converting between percentage, fraction and decimal

A student scored 78%\displaystyle 78\% on a test. Express this as (i) a fraction in its simplest form, and (ii) a decimal.

Show solution
(i) 78%=7810078\% = \dfrac{78}{100}
HCF of 7878 and 100100 is 22
=3950= \dfrac{39}{50}
(ii) 78%=78÷100=0.7878\% = 78 \div 100 = 0.78

Converting a fraction to a percentage

A phone plan includes 6\displaystyle 6 GB of data. After one week, 58\displaystyle \dfrac{5}{8} of the data has been used. Express this usage as a percentage.

Show solution
Percentage used\displaystyle \text{Percentage used}
=58×100%\displaystyle = \dfrac{5}{8} \times 100\%
=5008%\displaystyle = \dfrac{500}{8}\%
=62.5%\displaystyle = 62.5\%

Now you try

Express 910\frac{9}{10} as a percentage.

Show solution
910\displaystyle \frac{9}{10}
=910×100%\displaystyle = \frac{9}{10} \times 100\%
=90%\displaystyle = 90\%
