Why Equations Matter

Hannah is packing stickers into folders. If she puts 8 in each folder, she has 3 stickers left over. If she puts 9 in each folder, she is 5 short. How many folders does she have?

Guessing works eventually; algebra works first time. Let xx be the number of folders. The stickers number 8x+38x + 3 one way and 9x59x - 5 the other, so 8x+3=9x58x + 3 = 9x - 5.
