5.3Fractional Equations

A fractional equation has the unknown in the denominator. This is different from an equation with fractional coefficients (unknown in the numerator).

  • x+23=5\frac{x + 2}{3} = 5, fractional coefficient (unknown in numerator)
  • 92x5=3\frac{9}{2x - 5} = 3, fractional equation (unknown in denominator)

Unknown in denominator

Solve 203x+1=4\displaystyle \frac{20}{3x + 1} = 4.

Show solution
20\displaystyle 20
=4(3x+1)multiply both sides by (3x + 1)\displaystyle = 4(3x + 1) \quad \scriptsize\textit{multiply both sides by (3x + 1)}
20\displaystyle 20
=12x+4expand\displaystyle = 12x + 4 \quad \scriptsize\textit{expand}
12x\displaystyle 12x
=16\displaystyle = 16
x\displaystyle x
=43\displaystyle = \frac{4}{3}

Cross multiplication

Solve n3n+2=37\displaystyle \frac{n - 3}{n + 2} = \frac{3}{7}.

Show solution
7(n3)\displaystyle 7(n - 3)
=3(n+2)cross multiply\displaystyle = 3(n + 2) \quad \scriptsize\textit{cross multiply}
7n21\displaystyle 7n - 21
=3n+6expand\displaystyle = 3n + 6 \quad \scriptsize\textit{expand}
4n\displaystyle 4n
=27\displaystyle = 27
n\displaystyle n
=274\displaystyle = \frac{27}{4}

Now you try

Solve y2y+1=42\frac{y - 2}{y + 1} = \frac{4}{2}.

Show solution
y2y+1\displaystyle \frac{y - 2}{y + 1}
=42\displaystyle = \frac{4}{2}
2(y2)\displaystyle 2(y - 2)
=4(y+1)cross multiply\displaystyle = 4(y + 1) \quad \scriptsize\textit{cross multiply}
2y4\displaystyle 2y - 4
=4y+4\displaystyle = 4y + 4
2y\displaystyle -2y
=8\displaystyle = 8
y\displaystyle y
=4\displaystyle = -4
