4.3Addition and Subtraction of Linear Expressions

Think of xx as an object, like apples: 3x+5x=8x3x + 5x = 8x the way three apples and five make eight. Like terms share the same variables raised to the same powers, and only like terms combine.

  • 2x2x and 5x5x are like terms (same variable xx)
  • 77 and 4-4 are like terms (both constants)
  • 3xy-3xy and 2yx2yx are like terms (since xy=yxxy = yx)
  • 2x2x and 3y3y are unlike terms (different variables)
  • 2x2x and x2x^2 are unlike terms (different powers)
Combining like terms
ax+bx=(a+b)xax + bx = (a + b)x

Now you try

Simplify 4y2y4y - 2y.

Show solution
4y2y\displaystyle 4y - 2y
=(42)y\displaystyle = (4 - 2)y
=2y\displaystyle = 2y

Simplifying by combining like terms

Simplify 7a3b+2a+5ba\displaystyle 7a - 3b + 2a + 5b - a.

Show solution
Group like terms: (7a+2aa)+(3b+5b)(7a + 2a - a) + (-3b + 5b)
=8a+2b= 8a + 2b

Subtracting an expression

Subtract (4m+9)\displaystyle (4m + 9) from (10m1)\displaystyle (10m - 1).

Show solution
"Subtract AA from BB" means BAB - A.
(10m1)(4m+9)(10m - 1) - (4m + 9)
=10m14m9distribute the negative= 10m - 1 - 4m - 9 \quad \scriptsize\textit{distribute the negative}
=6m10= 6m - 10

Now you try

Simplify 8x+36x8x + 3 - 6x.

Show solution
Group like terms: (8x6x)+3(8x - 6x) + 3
=2x+3= 2x + 3
