4.2Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

Evaluating an expression means finding its numerical value when specific values are substituted for the variables.

Recall: BODMAS with negatives from Chapter 2.

Substitution with two variables

Given a=4\displaystyle a = 4 and b=7\displaystyle b = -7, evaluate 2a23b\displaystyle 2a^2 - 3b.

=2(4)23(7)\displaystyle = 2(4)^2 - 3(-7)
=2(16)(21)\displaystyle = 2(16) - (-21)
=32+21\displaystyle = 32 + 21
=53\displaystyle = 53

Evaluating a fraction

Given p=6\displaystyle p = -6 and q=4\displaystyle q = 4, evaluate p2+q2qp\displaystyle \frac{p^2 + q}{2q - p}.

=(6)2+42(4)(6)\displaystyle = \frac{(-6)^2 + 4}{2(4) - (-6)}
=36+48+6\displaystyle = \frac{36 + 4}{8 + 6}
=4014\displaystyle = \frac{40}{14}
=207\displaystyle = \frac{20}{7}
