6.3Linear Functions: The Equation y = mx + c

Recall: Chapter 5.1 (Linear Equations), the balancing principle used to rearrange an equation into y=mx+cy = mx + c.

A linear function has the form y=mx+cy = mx + c: since the highest power of xx is 1, its graph is always a straight line. The constant mm sets the steepness; the constant cc sets where the line crosses the yy-axis.

Standard form of a linear equation
y=mx+c\displaystyle y = mx + c
  • mm is the gradient: positive means the line rises, negative means it falls, zero means it is horizontal.
  • cc is the yy-intercept: the value of yy when x=0x = 0.
  • The further mm is from zero, in either direction, the steeper the line.
xyOy = 2x + 1(0, 1)
The line y=2x+1y = 2x + 1 has gradient m=2m = 2 and yy-intercept c=1c = 1, crossing the yy-axis at (0,1)(0, 1).

Reading gradient and yy-intercept

State the gradient and y\displaystyle y-intercept of the line y=4x+9\displaystyle y = -4x + 9.

Comparing y=4x+9y = -4x + 9 with y=mx+cy = mx + c:
Gradient m=4m = -4
yy-intercept c=9c = 9
Since m<0m < 0, the line falls from left to right.

Rearranging to find gradient and yy-intercept

Find the gradient and y\displaystyle y-intercept of the line 3y+12x=15\displaystyle 3y + 12x = 15.

Gradient m=4m = -4, yy-intercept c=5c = 5.
