Example 1

Expand (x6)(2x5)(x - 6)(2x - 5).

  • $= 2x^2 - 5x - 12x + 30 \quad \scriptsize\textit{expand}$
  • $= 2x^2 - 17x + 30$
  • $= 2x^2-17x+30$

Example 2

Factorise x2+x20x^2 + x - 20.

  • Find two numbers whose product is $-20$ and sum is $1$.
  • The numbers are $5$ and $-4$ since $5 \times (-4) = -20$ and $5 + (-4) = 1$.
  • $x^2 + x - 20 = (x + 5)(x - 4)$

Answer: (x+5)(x4)(x+5)(x-4)

Example 3

Factorise 9ax+12at+12nx+16nt9ax + 12at + 12nx + 16nt.

  • $= (9ax + 12at) + (12nx + 16nt) \quad \scriptsize\textit{group}$
  • $= 3a(3x + 4t) + 4n(3x + 4t) \quad \scriptsize\textit{extract common factors}$
  • $= (3a+4n)(3x+4t)$
